May Volunteer Spotlight: Nathan Merique

Due to the Memorial Day Weekend Holiday, we did not have a monthly meeting, so we were unable to announce our May Volunteer of the Month. So, let us meet our choice, Staff Sergeant Nathan Merique, US Army!

SSGT Merique was born in Pontiac, Michigan but moved to Hickory, North Carolina around the age of two. Nathan discovered the Hickory Aviation Museum during his middle school years and began volunteering while in high school. After graduating from Fred T. Foard High School, Nathan joined the United States Army on January 2nd, 2013.

Nathan completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, becoming a Cavalry Scout in the Fourth Infantry, Tenth Cavalry Division. He was stationed for many years in Colorado. In 2019, he was stationed in Iraq with later duty stations in Germany and several other European Countries.

He is currently serving as a Staff Sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky as an electronic warfare operator. Last year, he married his wife, Breanna. Over the years, without fail, Nathan returns home and stops by the museum.

The above just scratches the surface of the work and heart of this remarkable young man. His real passion is history and collecting original uniforms of historical figures since WWII. In addition, he researches local military men who lost their lives during wartime missions. From time-to-time, Nathan shares his knowledge by presenting programs during our monthly meetings and sharing his collectibles and research.

Thank you for your service and continued support of HAM!
