Volunteers have been feverishly working on the restoration of the museum aircraft, many of which have been outside for decades. Our Grumman F-14D Tomcat has been outside since it’s retirement nearly 20 years ago, and the weather and birds were not kind to this historic airframe. Our Restoration Team has scrubbed and scrubbed this jet and it’s looking good so far, with decals and markings to follow.
The Tomcat is on loan from The National Naval Aviation Museum, NAS Pensacola FL. It has an important role in the history of the F-14 platform as it was the jet that flew the last official flight in 2006 for the US Navy during the Sunset Ceremony held at NAS Oceana VA. After the ceremony, the jet was disassembled and trucked down to Hickory NC to be reassembled and placed on display.
The museum has been closed since the end of December and will reopen in the new hangar later this Spring. Details will follow as we move closer to that date!
